Supporting Organization Fact Sheet
A supporting organization has 509 (a)(3) status supporting The Community Foundation.
Purpose
A supporting organization allows a donor or private foundation to gain affiliation with The Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta, Inc. The supporting organization receives the benefits and services of the Foundation while retaining autonomy through a separate Board of Directors.
Asset Size
Fund balance of $2,000,000 or more.
Tax Benefits
The Community Foundation’s public charity tax status provides maximum income tax deduction benefits for gifts of appreciated property and cash unavailable to private foundations. Gifts of restricted stock, privately-held stock and real estate generally receive full fair market value deductions as well.
Governance
A supporting organization maintains a separate Board of Directors, a majority of whom are legally appointed by the Board of Directors of The Community Foundation. The supporting organization’s Board manages its own grantmaking activities and investment management.
Administration
The Community Foundation staff can provide support and management for grantmaking,
asset management and tax filings, or the supporting organization’s Board of
Directors may manage those services.
Oversight
We require that at least one of The Community Foundation’s Board members, officers or staff receive an invitation to attend each meeting (either as a formal appointee or as an ex-officio Board member).
