Giving: A Shared Inheritance

African American Giving & Volunteering in Metropolitan Atlanta

The Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta has undertaken a research project, Giving: A Shared Inheritance, to further understand and engage the metro area’s African American donors and volunteers. Phase I of the project (the quantitative phase) has been completed and encompasses four years of examining trends in giving, volunteering, trust and social capital.

The objective of the study is to increase the capacity of the metropolitan Atlanta nonprofit community to engage African Americans as donors and volunteers to strengthen communities. Undocumented before now, Phase I statistics reveal that Atlanta’s African American community has a strong giving spirit. The Foundation, in partnership with a study Design Team of respected thought leaders representing diverse sectors, will use study findings to impact philanthropy in metro Atlanta.

Phase II of Giving, a qualitative approach that entails one-on-one and focus group interviews, will identify and explore the data revealed in Phase I. Together, Phase I and II will create what the Foundation believes to be the most significant recent base of regional knowledge on African American giving and volunteering than any other metropolitan area in the country.

In addition to the Design Team, a group of influential Atlantans has agreed to serve on the Advisory Committee of Giving.
