An Extra Wish
Organizations of all kinds use "wish lists" to tell their supporters or the general public about special needs they have that cannot be met with current financial resources.
The Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta has 500 living donors already
committed to supporting charitable organizations. As a service to them, through
our Common Good Funds applicants, the Foundation created An Extra Wish.
This publication lists special needs of organizations supported by our Common Good Funds.
What is An Extra Wish?
The purpose of this program is to:
- familiarize donors with nonprofit organizations supported by the Foundation's grantmaking; and
- help organizations meet their resource needs in innovative ways.
Who is eligible to apply for An Extra Wish?
To be eligible, a prospective applicant must:
- Meet the eligibility requirements for the Common Good Funds. These requirements are described in the sections above; and
- Apply for a grant from the Common Good Funds at the same time that you apply for An Extra
Wish.
What is An Extra Wish?
This program is focused on cash and in-kind contributions of goods, not services
or staff. There is no dollar limit on requests. Our experience shows that most
grants from the Foundation's donor-advised funds fall between $200 and $2,500.
In the past, the most successful wishes were requests for items that relate
directly to program efforts, instead of organizational operating equipment.
Requests might include:
- Supplemental resources for program participants: expendable and nonexpendable
items that will help program participants succeed, including food, clothing,
MARTA tokens, toys, age-appropriate reading material and equipment for people
with disabilities.
- Capital items: office equipment like FAX machines, phone systems,
copy machines, furniture, kitchen appliances and items needed to comply with
the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
- Program resources for organizations: non-expendable program-related
resources such as reference books or videos, training materials or data.
Please note: Requests for computers -- hardware, software, printers,
networking and upgrades to computers to increase capacity or provide Internet
or e-mail access -- have typically received a less favorable response.
When should requests be submitted?
An Extra Wish will continue with funding even though we are postponing our July 2008 Common Good Funds cycle. Please check back for additional information regarding when and how we'll be accepting applications.
How are applicants notified?
The Foundation notifies applicants only if their request receives support from a donor through a Foundation fund. There is no way to anticipate if, when or how many donors will act on the opportunities to give.
Please do not call about the status of your request. We encourage you to contact
the Foundation via e-mail at grants@atlcf.org
with all other questions.
